Are you looking for fresh ideas to teach matter, states of matter, and phase change to your middle school students? This comprehensive resource may be just what you are looking for. It is designed to provide your students with the opportunity to:

1. Read about the matter and its properties

2. Learn and explore the physical and chemical properties of matter.

3. Learn about the composition of atoms, such as electrons, protons, and neutrons.

4. Learn about the mass number, atomic number, and common uses of elements on the periodic table.

5. Investigate the states of matter and phase change of solids, liquids, and gases.

6. Collaborate with others

7. Make observations and predictions

8. Think critically

9. Engage in meaningful discussion

The resource includes:

  • What Matter Is & Why It Matters Reading (1 page)
  • Post Reading Worksheet (1 page)
  • Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Station Worksheets (2 pages)
  • ATOMS: The Building Blocks of Matter (2 pages)
  • Elements and Their Uses Notes (2 pages)
  • States of Matter Station Activity Worksheets ( 2 pages )
  • Station Instruction and Notes ( 6 pages )
  • Answer Keys
  • Teacher Guide

The resource can be easily integrated into your existing teaching materials, used as a stand-alone, or even as a review at the end of the unit.

All materials can be easily obtained or substituted to fit the available resource of the teacher without affecting the main goals of the activity.

Part 1:What Matter Is & Why It Matters Reading

In this part, students will read a passage about what matter is, its properpties and how it is classified. Afterward, they will complete a post-reading worksheet.

Part 2: Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Station

In this part, students will explore physical and chemical properties of matter in a 7-station activity. They will move around the classroom, complete some tasks and answer questions related to the tasks. I have included how to set up the stations, tips and teacher guide that will make the activity successful.

Part 3:ATOMS: The Building Blocks of Matter

Inthis part, students will learn about the atom and its composition. They will also complete a task about their top three favorite elements on the periodic table. I have included the “element notes” that provide students with all the information needed to successfully complete this task.

Part 4: States of Matter Station Activity

In this part, students will investigate the three states of matter through a six-station activity. Here, student groups will move around the classroom to complete some tasks to explore solids, liquids, gases, and phase change. I have included station notes/directions to guide students. See more details in the preview.

I truly believe this resource will be a great addition to your teaching toolbox and help your students learn about the matter, its properties, and phase change. This resource will provide them the chance to practice their reading skills too, collaborate with others, practice scientific skills, and engage in meaningful discussions. The list of materials is quite easy to find, and the teacher has the option to substitute any material according to what is available without affecting the main goal of the activities.

I have included the answer key to all worksheets. See preview.
