Teach your next enthalpy of reactions ( Hess's Law and Enthalpy of formation) lesson using this engaging PHET simulation that will provide your students the opportunity to:
1. Play and explore energy changes during endothermic and exothermic reactions using the online PHET Simulation.
2. Answer a series of questions related to the online task.
3. Learn about Hess’ Law and the enthalpy of formation
4. Calculate ΔH° of reactions using Hess’s Law and the enthalpy of formation.
***Please see the preview to check sample worksheets, list of materials, and further details ***
The resource includes:
- Exploring Reaction Energy with PhET Worksheet ( 4 pages )
- Hess’ Law Problem Set ( 1 page )
- Enthalpy of Formation Problem Set 1 page )
- Answer Keys
- Teacher Guide
The resource can be easily integrated into your existing teaching materials, used as a stand-alone, or even as a review at the end of the unit.
Part 1: Exploring Reaction Energy with PhET
In this part, students will explore an online simulation to observe energy changes during chemical reactions. They will follow clear instructions on their lab sheets and answer a series of questions related to the task.
I have included 3 ways to access the PHET simulation, which is FREE to use, and no downloads are needed.
Part 2: Hess’s Law and Enthalpy of Formation Problem Set
In this part, students will answer four calculation questions each on Hess’s Law and the enthalpy of formation. This will provide them the chance to apply mathematical thinking and computation to energy changes during a reaction. The questions range from simple to more complex, providing the right amount of challenge to students.
I am confident this enthalpy of reactions resource will be a great addition to your thermochemistry unit. It will help your students explore how reactants gain or lose energy, how temperature and catalyst affect reactions + more, in a fun way. The PHET sim is FREE to use and easy to play, and requires no downloads.
I have included the answer key to all worksheets. See the preview.
