Teach classification of living things with this 5-part lesson that will engage your students from start to finish. The resource will provide the opportunity for your students to :
1) Illustrate and define the 8 levels of biological organization.
2) Complete a crossword activity about key terms related to biological organization
3) Illustrate the flow of energy through an ecosystem.
4) Complete an optional t-shirt design activity related to the topic.
5) Classify organisms from the domain to the species level

Part 1:Levels of Organization
In this part, students will illustrate and define the different levels of biological organization. After this, they will complete a crossword activity to review the key terms and their meanings.
Part 2: Energy Flow & Food Web
In this part, students will read a short passage about trophic levels, the roles of different organisms, and how energy flows in the ecosystem.
Afterward, they will draw arrows to illustrate the flow of energy within an ecosystem and answer further questions to enhance their understanding of the concept.
Part 3: Optional Extension Activity: Levels of Organization T-Shirt Design
This is an optional activity. It is a great way for students to showcase their creative skills by designing a t-shirt on the theme of levels of biological organization. I have included further details in the resource. See the sample answer key in the preview.
Part 4: Classification of Organisms
Version 1: In this part, students draw an organism of their choice. They will then write 4 physical traits, show the current location or range of the organism on a world map, and complete a classification of the organism from the domain to the species level.
Version 2: I have provided 5 organisms that may be assigned to students. In this part, students have no choice in the organism they will work on.
The resource can be easily integrated into your existing teaching materials, used as a stand-alone, or even as a review at the end of the unit.
I am confident this resource will be a great addition to your teaching toolbox and help your students explore such a fundamental topic. They will get to do research, collaborate with others, and apply their creative skills. The activities require little prep time, which saves the teacher valuable time.
